Last night I got back home and surprise surprise: there is a
lost cat (brown with black stripes) outside my apartment door. How it got there
past the secured door downstairs is beyond me. Anyway, as I approach it, it
runs past me down to a neighbour’s door and tries to get in. I thought,
probably it's the neighbours cat and knock on the door. The lady comes out and
says that it's not hers and even she noticed it when she got home.
Ummm... a lost cat out in the cold. I decided to let it go anyway but now it won't
leave me! Following me around everywhere and sticking very close. No matter how
much I push it away, it just won't go! Got me scratching my head for a while,
as I wondered – what to do? In the end decided to keep it for the night, so I
let it in. First time got an animal inside the house (my dogs back in Bangladesh are
not allowed to get inside the house – they are guard dogs).
First things first: food and water. Cats love fish. Don’t
they? Tuna in veggie oil should do just about fine. Opened up a can of tuna in
a small dish and left it on the kitchen floor. It was pretty hungry, finished
off half before I could even fetch some water. Now I got another problem: What goes
in must comes out – cat poo. No clue if this cat is toilet trained and even if
it is, I don’t have any cat litter. I have got myself in trouble, haven’t I?
Anyway, I let it wander around in the apartment. Closed off the bedroom
doors so it’s confined within the living room and I can see where it is while I
work. Watching it crawling and inspecting every corner of the living room and
kitchen was fun. Not sure if all cats are like this, but this one is curious to
find out what is behind every object. Checking out behind the computer desk,
fridge, washing machine, bookshelf, couch, bin, bean bag - everything. It even
got itself stuck behind the couch, stupid cat.
It had a liking for my towel that was on the couch and while I was working
it took a nice one hour nap on the couch wrapping itself with my towel. At
around 10 o’clock it got up, stretched and decided it was lap time, on my lap.
Jumped up on my lap, even though I wasn’t calling it and decided to join me to
watch the movie. It was kind of fun playing with it and watch it curiously
checking out my wrist watch. For the next two hours all it did was eat, drink,
jump on my lap, get cuddled, get stuck behind that couch and purr every time I
wasn’t paying much attention. Damn, these cats demand attention.
Soon it was bed time for me. I just couldn’t trust the cat to wander around
in the living room for the rest of the night, so I got a pillow, threw my towel
that it liked over it and left it in the laundry area with more tuna and water.
Good night kitty…
This morning before I left for work, checked on the cat in the laundry,
seems alright. Probably wondering for how long is it going to be stuck there.
Called up the local council to enquire about this cat being collected.
Apparently there is a four week wait. Yeah right, in four weeks I’ll be on
holiday. Got the number of “Cat protection society” from them (there is
a cat protection society?). Called up CPS, and this afternoon I’ll be dropping
off the cat. Better not forget to take a picture of the cat before dropping it
off. I’ll upload the picture here later tonight.
Update: Got back home from work to pick up the cat. I was advised by the CPE guys
not to leave the cat in the car while I was driving, because they can get crazy
without notice. But this cat was very quite and well mannered. So I didn't
bother to stuff in a box, rather left it on the back seat. Pretty much remained
there quietly, enjoying the 30mins journey to CPE office.
The cat is now safe at the CPE facility. It will be there for 8 days for
anyone to claim. If unclaimed, then it will go up for a vet assessment and then
put up for adoption. They keep it for available for adoption for a couple of
weeks after which will be "put to sleep".
Before I dropped it off, I took some pictures while it was in my car:
